The Truth About Running For Office

Wednesday, March 23 | 12:00 – 12:45 PM CDT

A livestream event (Facebook and YouTube)

What is it actually like to run for a local elected office in the social media age? In the words of one candidate this past fall, it’s “frustrating yet fulfilling, disappointing yet rewarding, surprising yet unexpected, and motivating” whether you succeed or not.

Amanda Vega-Mavec ran for city council in Overland Park and came up 291 votes short. Janeth Vazquez became the first Latina to win election to the Liberal City Commission. Despite the different outcomes of their races, the two are connected as part of a cohort of barrier-breaking candidates who sought to win office this past fall and increase Latina representation in their communities’ local governments in the process.

Join a panel featuring Amanda and Janeth for a conversation with Journal Executive Editor Chris Green about how they navigated the challenges of running for office and what advice they have for others hoping to step forward to represent their communities.
